Our three Ensembles

For all ensembles, weekly rehearsals take place Saturdays at The Sacred Heart School of Montreal, 3635 Atwater Ave. Montreal, QC, H3H 1Y4

Music is provided, and we ask that all students bring a music stand.

String Ensemble

Saturday, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

The junior string ensemble for ages 5 to 12. The goal of the ensemble is to give young musicians the opportunity to discover the fun of learning to play together. The repertoire is carefully chosen and arranged so that all levels may participate; no matter what the student’s abilities, he or she will be included, challenged, and encouraged.

Activities

  • 1.5 hour rehearsals, 30 per year.
  • 1 outing to a Montréal Symphony Orchestra Children’s Corner Concert
  • 3 concerts per year

Dolce Musica

Saturday, 1:00 to 3:15 pm

The intermediate level string orchestra for ages 11 to 15. The goal of the ensemble is to give young musicians of an intermediate level the opportunity to develop basic orchestral skills in order to prepare them for eventual entry into the Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire is carefully chosen to build confidence on both a technical and musical level, while developing all aspects of string playing.

Activities

  • 2.25 hour rehearsals, 30 per year.
  • 8 sectionals per year with professional string coaches.
  • one weekend intensive.
  • participation in the Festival de la Relève.
  • 3 concerts per year.

Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

The most advanced of the WYO ensembles open to musicians aged 14 to 25. The goal of the Symphony Orchestra is not only to provide the opportunity for young musicians to develop advanced orchestral skills by preparing challenging and exciting music for performance, but also to provide them with an enriching musical experience by introducing them to the great orchestral repertoire.

Activities

  • 3 hour rehearsals, 35 per year.
  • minimum 8 sectionals per year with professional string, wind and brass coaches.
  • one weekend intensive.
  • 4 concerts per year.
  • chamber music.
  • national or international tour every 5 years.
  • participation in the Festival of the Association of Quebec Youth Orchestras (every 2 years).
